Thank The Mayans for Chocolate Giveaway Week #1

Welcome to the Thank The Mayans for Chocolate Giveaway! To celebrate the release of Jungle Crossing, I'm giving away my favorite chocolates, a signed book, and bobble-head turtles (because they're just too cute).

This week's selection comes from The Chocolate Bar in downtown Boise, Idaho (here I am buying you chocolate!). The lovely chocolatiers have selected a box of hand-crafted customer favorites just for you. I'm also including a bag of chocolate bark from Dream Chocolate. And you thought Idaho was just famous for potatoes!

Chocolate tidbit: The ancient Mayans and Aztecs used cocoa beans like coins, trading them for marketplace goods. But you had to watch out for counterfeit beans--some folks tried to cheat by hollowing out cocoa beans and filling them with dirt.

To enter the contest make a comment at www.mybignose.blogspot.com & tell me about your favorite chocolate. This week's contest ends on September 28, 2009. Good luck!

  1. I went to Berlin this summer and brought home $100 to $150 worth of European chocolates of all forms! We had strawberry-rhubarb yoghurt, lime bark, sweet cherry chili and lots of others. My favorite was the simple, smooth milk chocolate from Milka. I had a box of wafer-thin chocolate hearts that I am seriously thinking of trying to import since they don't sell them here. :-D

  2. Sydney!! No fair! I don't like chocolate! I like brussel sprouts. Can I still be in the contest? I do like chocolate cupcakes...does that count?

  3. I already have a copy of Jungle Crossing--signed by you (Yay)--so I don't really need another. However, I'll take the chocolate! Anyway, I read Jungle Crossing this week, and I LOVED it. I totally love the story-within-a-story format, and I was really impressed that the story of Muluc was your own creation. It felt so authentically Mayan, I was sure it was a real legend. And boy, you made Barb the little sister the most irritating little sister I think literature has ever seen! Even I wanted to slap her. Anyway, GREAT JOB. It was a fun book, filled with great history and characters.

  4. My favorite chocolate is Godiva....mostly because I love looking at all the shapes and colors! But it tastes pretty yummy, too.

Did you know that scammers existed even back during the time of the ancient Mayans? These crooks would try to pawn off fake coffee beans made from clay. So the Maya soon learned to bite down on coffee beans to ensure they were the real deal! ;-)

My favourite chocolate is dark chocolate. I don't have a favourite brand (I prefer good-quality brands, but there are several that I can't choose between).

  9. My favourite chocolates are Neuhaus, because they are supremely delicious and they remind me of Belgium, where I used to live and miss dreadfully even years later. Although I do have a dreadful fondness for cheap Milka chocolate, the kind with creamy white filling. It is so very wonderful when you are in need of a quick chocolate fix!

  10. Oh, chocolate, I adore thee! Let me...not count the ways ;-)
I love all chocolates, but the hazelnut-creme ones are the best!
Oh, your book sounds so interesting! What made you consider Mayan history as a basis?

  13. Thanks, everyone, for telling me about your favorite chocolates (I'm totally in craving mode now, but I promise not to eat your chocolates!).

Ikkinlala, Canadians are most welcome to enter!

Stephanie, I've loved Mayan culture since my family took a trip there when I was a child (my dad is a biologist and was studying bats and parrots).

  14. My favorite chocolate is from Wisconsin! It's from a place called Beerntsen's Candies. Jungle Crossing sounds really cool! I'd love to win, then read, and share it!

  15. My favorite chocolate is from England because other than USA thats the only other kind I've had. They dont have near as many (or any maybe) preservatives in them and they just taste so true and creeeeeamy.

  16. Fun contest, thanks!
I am truly a little addicted to Milka (chocolat with biscuit in in it) and Crunch, but onfotunately somehow Crunch is hard to get in the netherlands

  17. Oh gosh, I'm a sucker for chocolate. I'll eat it in the cheap Hershey Kisses form or covering just about anything. It's a sickness really.

My favorite would have to these Salt Lake City locally made truffles. I think that's even what they're called. I've only had them once but the memory has stayed with me!

  18. This summer, while wine-tasting in Sonoma Valley, I learned a new treat: let a wafer of dark chocolate melt a little on your tongue, then take a sip of rich port over the wafer. Oh, if the Mayans had just had red grapes, they'd have been a lot less surly! Love your book -- I've bought copies to give to my son's school library!

  19. I like any dark chocolate, the darker the better. Also like chocolate 'bandaids' which I used to keep in my drawer at work in case a co-worker was having a bad day.
